Homosexuality

With questions about homosexuality it is important that we stand with the Bible in loving them and recognizing that it is wrong. The passage below does a beautiful job of both calling it sin and listing it with other sins but also painting forgiveness.

1 Cor 6:9-11  “ Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” ESV

  • The ESV footnote on the word homosexuality: “The two Greek terms translated by this phrase refer to the passive and active partners in consensual homosexual acts.”

This can bring a lot of different reactions. Questions both whether it's wrong and questioning God’s design.

When asked a marriage question Jesus brought things back to the pattern in the beginning. Matt 19he was being asked about divorce and he brought it back and said if wasn’t this way from the beginning. God made them male and female and for this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and the two shall become one flesh. This wasn’t instructions for Adam and Eve’s marriage; this was a pattern for us. When God gave these instructions there wasn’t a father or a mother to leave, but God was setting up a pattern and it is what Jesus went to when asked about a marriage question.

Matt 19:4-6  - “He answered, "Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate." ESV

Many times people say they are born this way or point to some this is who I am as a license to engage.

  • But my desires may be what they are but that doesn’t give license to indulge them, regardless of whether they are some sex, opposite gender, or even anger…….. I am called to live a life to honor God and not to live a life controlled by my fleshly desires and feelings.

  • The verse below is beautiful because it doesn’t single out one sexual sin and it doesn’t shame me for having a desire that God calls wrong. It does call me as a follower of God to live a holy life, a life not dominated by my fleshly desires regardless of attraction or orientation.

1 Thess 4:3-5  - “God's will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin. Then each of you will control his own body and live in holiness and honor-- not in lustful passion like the pagans who do not know God and his ways.” NLT

Other verses:

Rom 1:27 “Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. NKJV

- It calls homosexuality shameful, It goes on in vs 28 to say it shouldn’t be done.

- vs 24; misuse and abuse are hard on things, it isn’t a road that God had in mind for us. When our walk is contrary to his instructions we step out from his protection. If you try to use your car as a dump truck when the loader drops the dirt on your car and your the axle breaks it isn’t the car's fault of or even the makers. You are abusing it by using it contrary to its design. We weren’t made for sin. Sin then causes us to break, because it is outside of what we were made for.
